An experimental study on instability of granular materials at high pressures was performed on dense Cambria sand in both triaxial compression and extension using cylindrical specimens. The instability line, which is located through the top points of the effective stress paths of undrained tests, separates stable and unstable soil behavior. Instability was experimentally demonstrated in compression and extension tests at stress levels located above the instability line. Further experiments clearly indicated that stable behavior was found beneath the instability line, but once it was crossed, unstable soil behavior was obtained.
