In 1970, Cyperus serotinus Rottb, a perennial weed in paddy field, was observed to be damaged by an insect identified as Calamotropha opha shichto Maruno at the Miyazaki Agricultural Experiment Station. The larvae of this insect bored into the stem and tuber of the perrenial weed. Therefore, in 1972 a survey on the extent of insect damage on C. serotinus and the L00d habits of this insect were investigated in Miyazaki Prefecture. Observation fo damage within Miyazaki Prefecture indicated that the percent of damaged stems was high along the Coastal plain where large populations of this weed are found to be distributed. The percent damage was low in the High land where only scatterred populations are found. The incidence and extent of damage were found to vary considerably within a site in the same region. Severe damage caused death of many tubers. However, tubers from vigorously growing plants survived severe insect damage. Observations indicated that stem damage varied considerably between species in the Cyperaceae family. The percent damage were: C. serotinus - 100%, Cyperus malaccensis Lam - 52%, and Scirpus hotarui Ohwi, O%. The food preference of this insect appears to be selective.
