Rare earth impurity in a fluoride glass optical fiber is analyzed according to photoluminescence measurement. According to an analysis using Ar-ion laser excitation, Pr^<3+< impurity content is quantified as 25 ppb in a fluoride glass optical fiber of the current product. Rare earth impurity analysis using photoluminescence measurement on a fiber specimen has sensitivity at least 1000 times higher than that on a bulk specimen. Photoluminescence measurement is effective for analyzing rare earth impurities in fluoride glass optical fibers.
