An optical technique for the observation of the ultrasound waveform is presented. The phase grating produced by ultrasound is imaged outside an acoustic medium. The Raman-Nath parameter is extracted with a photodetector located in the image plane using an optical heterodyne method. This technique has the flat response in frequency pertinent to the short pulse measurement.
