Nonaqueous Suspension Spinning of High-T_c Ba-Y-Cu-O Superconductor : Electrical Properties of Condensed Matter

The preparation of a high-T_c Ba_2Y_1Cu_3O_x superconducting filament was studied by nonaqueous suspension spinning. The fine powder of the oxide was suspended in PVA dimethyl sulfoxide solution containing a dispersant. The viscous suspension was extruded as a filament into a precipitating medium of methyl alcohol and coiled on a winding drum. The obtained filament, 200 μm in diameter, was heated to remove volatile components and to generate the layered perovskite phase. The heated filament with tensile strength of 37 MPa was a superconductor at 84 K and had a J_c value of 680 A/cm^2 at 77 K.
