On the Fluorination Dependence of T_c in YBa_2Cu_3O_<7-σ> : Electrical Properties of Condensed Matter

It is shown, in terms of a model in which the superconducting carriers in YBa_2Cu_3O_<7-σ> are holes in an oxygen band, that fluorination of the material can either increase or decrease the concectration of these holes depending on the amount of fluorine and where it is incorporated into the lattice. From the experimentally established dependence of T_c on σ in YBa_2Cu_3O_<7-σ>-and consistent with its known structure-the likely range of T_c values corresponding to the different possible degrees of fluorination is calculated, and is found to cover the various experimental T_c values reported to date; the consequences of replacing fluorine with nitrogen are discussed.
