The in-plane reorientation of smectic layers of ferroelectric smectic C liquid crystals, enclosed in sandwich cells, can be continuous or limited to twice the molecular tilt angle, depending on the surface treatment of the substrates. We have identified the imposing of a preferred direction of alignment through unidirectional rubbing to be responsible for the limitation of the smectic layer reorientation, As soon as the monostable boundary conditions are changed to degenerate planar anchoring (no preferred alignment direction) the limited layer reorientation transforms into a continuous one.
