Melt-grown (MG) RBa_2Cu_3O_7 (R-123; R=Nd, Sm) containing uniformly distributed Au particulate inclusions have been prepared by slow cooling at oxygen pressures between 2 and 152 Torr (air), where Au is engulfed into the oxide grains as melt droplets. Au does not show adverse effect on either T_c or the nucleation and growth behaviors of the R-123 oxides. On the other hand, the presence of Au inclusions in the solidified R-123 oxide matrices greatly reduces cracking and has led to enhancement in the supercurrent loop size perpendicular to the basal plane. Controlled mechanical testing also shows that the Au inclusions are effective in blunting crack tip and changing its propagation path.
