To investigate magnetic hardening mechanisms in sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets, magnetic hysteresis loops of sintered Nd_<15>Fe_<77>B_8 magnets 100 μm thick, the surfaces of which are sputter-deposited with Nd or Tb metal, were measured at various steps in the sample preparation procedures. The surface grains in as-polished magnets have a very small coercivity of approximately 150 kA/m. Sputter deposition of Nd or Tb metal on the polished magnets and a subsequent heat treatment have resulted in a dramatic improvement of coercivity of the surface grains.
