It is first demonstrated that the ferromagnetic MnAl layers are formed directly by ion beam induced mixing with 400 keV Xe^+ ions. Their magnetic properties strongly depend on the ion dose and the substrate temperature during ion irradiation. A characteristic spectral line originating from the metastable τ phase with ferromagnetism is observed in the X-ray diffraction measurement. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that the dynamical collision cascades assisted by the enhanced diffusion are the decisive factors forming the ferromagnetic MnAl layers.
