Application of Retardation Compensation : A New Highly Multiplexable Black-White Liquid Crystal Display with Two Supertwisted Nematic Layers

Compensation of birefringent retardation is applied to a supertwisted nematic liquid crystal layer. The birefringent effect of the layer is totally canceled by another supertwisted nematic layer of opposite helical sense. Numerical computation confirmed complete extinction of light between crossed polarizers. A highly multiplexable black-white liquid crystal display is obtained with the technique.
