A simple method for fabricating SERS-active substrates with colloidal gold nanoparticles is reported, Spontaneous adsorption of HSCH_2CH_2NH_2 on Au-evaporated glass led to a self-assembled monolayer with an aminoterminated surface, on which mono-dispersed colloidal Au nanoparticles were assembled into a two-dimensional array. Thus-prepared substrates were shown to be SERS-active, evidenced by the enhanced Raman scattering from BPE and an azobenzene derivative. The SERS enhancement factor was calculated to be 3×10^3. Raman mapping and AFM imaging disclosed the good uniformity of the particle distribution on the surface on micrometer scale.
