The possibility of fractal growth was investigated by analyzing atomic force microscopy images of a poly (tetrahydrofuran) epitaxial monolayer on graphite formed during polymerization of monomers. Usually, the film develops by uniform growth of elongated, flat islands filling the bare surface as polymerization continues. Occasionally, an irregular morphology was observed at a surface coverage of 0.75-0.80. Double logarithmic plots of the perimeter against the area of these irregularly shaped islands yield straight lines, from which the fractal dimension of the contour is estimated to be no greater than 1.80.
