A multilayer consisting of 40 periods of NiFe (Ni81, Fe19 in wt%) and Cu, the thicknesses of which are 1 nm each, was deposited on an underlayer of 20 nm NiFe grown on a MgO(110) single-crystal substrate. A strongly anisotropic behavior in its magnetoresistive property is evident when the magnetic field is applied along the [11^^-0] and [001] directions. Its crystallographic relationship with the substrate is assigned as NiFe/Cu(110)//MgO(110) perpendicular to the plane of the film, and NiFe/Cu[11^^-0]//MgO[11^^-0], NiFe/Cu[001]//MgO[001] in the plane of the film.
