The gray-scale characteristics has been observed in a high-tilt-angle ferroelectric liquid crystal, possessing Isotropic-chiral nematic-smectic C^* phase transition in a thin and polymer rubbed surface of the sample. The results have been analysed by electrical and optical method. It has been found that the gray-scale characteristics appear because of the strorng anchoring effect on polymer rubbed surface due to the unwinding and winding of the smectic layer twisted structure which is present very close to the rubbed surface
