• A method to produce a few pico- and possibly sub-picosecond pulses of synchrotron radiation on storage rings is proposed. A transverse kick is given to an electron bunch by using an RF deflector. The kick angle is proportional to the longitudinal distance from the bunch center. Each longitudinal segment of the bunch initiates betatron motion and emits photons in different directions. These photons are introduced to a beam line which produces a difference in path length depending on their angles of emission, such that the pulse length originating from the electron bunch length is canceled out. The final pulse length is limited by the angular divergence of the radiation.
