Evaluation of Synergism in Flashover Voltage Properties of Gas Mixtures

The flashover voltage properties of gas mixtures have been investigated very actively over the past several years with a view to finding an alternative to SF_6 as a dielectric gas. Almost all likely gas mixtures have been examined experimentally, and a systematic way of arranging the results is now being sought. The present paper evaluates synergism in the flashover voltage properties of binary gas mixtures consisting of SF_6, N_2, O_2, Ar and CCl_2F_2 for each item caused by α and η (the ionization and attachment coefficients), and constituent gases. It is found that SF_6+CCl_2F_2 and O_2+N_2 gas mixtures belong to the η-synergism group and the α-synergism group respectively, and α and η contribute in a similar degree in the other gas mixtures. It is also found that the constituent gases act on synergism in directions contrary to each other in almost all cases.
