Structural changes occurring in heterojunctions with lapse of time are treated as the behavior of thin-film diffusion couples, and the Cahn-Hilliard non-linear diffusion equation is solved without omission for such couples for the first time. It is shown that two phases in equilibrium connected by a diffuse interface are formed at temperatures where the two phases are immiscible. Effects of thickness in the couples and of the gradient energy coefficient on the composition difference between the two equilibrium phases are determined. The formation of the asymmetric composition profiles yielded by the non-linear term and the rapid disappearance of the initial sharp interface as a result of the gradient energy are also analysed.
