The Density Gradient of Multiplied Dislocations in the Surface Region of Deformed Sn Crystals

When a Sn crystal was plastically deformed in tension, a hard layer of high dislocation density was formed in the near-surface region, extending to 0〜150 μm in depth below the surface. The hard layer involved a plateau region of constant dislocation density with a depth of 30〜100 μm. The presence of such a plateau region suggests that both the surface and the interior dislocation sources are already activated at an early stage of plastic deformation.
