The radiation-induced reduction of the surface charge on polymer foil thermoelectrets has been studied in relation to the effect of the gas surrounding the electret. The reduction of the charge due to gas ion collection depends strongly on the gas in the chamber. The charge reduction in a parallel-plate electret dosimeter is treated theoretically following the ionization chamber theory for the electret-induced electric field strength of the ionization chamber region (ICR) and the gas ion recombination region (ICR). The exponential reduction of the charge by radiation in an intense electret of fluoride polymers is also described, using the gas ion multiplication model. The electric field induced by the electret is considered to have entered the proportional counter region (PCR).
