A theoretical study of the electric discharge across a shock wave was conducted. As the radiation intensity is proportional to the rate of generation of excited molecules, the ratio of the radiation intensity in front of the shock wave to that behind it can be obtained as a function of the density, density ratio and electric field. The calculation results agree qualitatively with the experimental ones for E/P<500 V/cm ・ Torr. This type of discharge is used for shock wave visualization and carries with it the possibility of increasing the discharge current and volume.
