The dependence of the gain of a parallel-plate electron multiplier on the dynode spacing is obtained theoretically and examined experimentally. For a certain voltage applied to the dynodes, there is a single spacing at which maximum gain occurs. On increasing the applied voltage, this optimum spacing decreases in value and the maximum gain increases exponentially. The experimental results agree well with calculated values except at higher voltages, where gain saturation occurs.
