The speed distribution of Ne, Ar, N_2, O_2, NO, CO, CO_2, and CH_4 molecular beams scattered by Ag (111) surfaces was observed for an incident energy of 78-88 meV, an incident angle of 50°, and a surface temperature of 500 K. The sensitivity of the mean speed and mean energy to the scattering direction is found to be correlated with the symmetry of the scattered molecules, i.e., monatomic〓linear symmetric>linear asymmetric〓CH_4, while the behavior of the standard deviation of the speed distribution parallels that of the width of the spatial distribution of the scattered flux when the different gases are compared.
