To improve the oscillation characteristics of the He-Zn^+ ion laser, a new type of high-voltage hollow-cathode discharge (HV-HCD) was employed as an excitation source. The high voltage of this laser tube is obtained by restricting part of the inner cathode wall using insulators. The output power characteristics of the 7588 Å transition in ZnII are compared with those obtained using the conventional coaxial-type HCD laser tube. In the conventional HCD laser tube, a saturation or a quenching in the laser power has been observed over a wide He pressure and Zn vapor pressure range. However, in the HV-HCD laser tube, these phenomena are not observed over the entire experimental range. Moreover, the slope of the dependence of the discharge current on the laser power is much steeper.
