The following improvements were made on an optical fiber droplet sizer (previously developed by the author) that is used to measure the particle size and number density: (1) An accurate equation of the light intensity received on an optical fiber was derived while considering the scattering angle range of the light received on the optical fiber and the attenuation of the irradiation beam. (2) The particle size distribution, expressed as the particle number in units of volume, was obtained by solving the above accurate equation. As a result of measurements of polystyrene particles with known size distributions and know number densities, it was confirmed that the accuracy of measurements was improved so that the error of the average diameter D was less than 0.1 μm (0.1 μm≨D≨1.0μm) and the error of the number density was less than 100% (0.3 μm≨D≨ 1.0 μm).
