Experimental Study of the Cavity Modes of Stressed High-Birefringent Fiber Fabry-Perot Cavities

We investigated the evolutions of the cavity modes and modal retardation of high-birefringent fibers by constructing single-mode fiber Fabry-Perot cavities. In such a fiber cavity, the changes of two cavity modes were different at various misaligned forces and we were able to distinguish the two principal fiber axes. Verification of our approach was also experimentally carried out by using a conventional elastooptic alignment method. Applications as fiber polarimetric sensors are also presented.
