The phase evolution in the melt of Bi_2Sr_xCa_<3-x>Cu_2O_z has been investigated in 0.01 atm oxygen environment. It has been found that a 4-phase equilibrium is achieved among Bi_2(Sr, Ca)_3O_6, (Sr, Ca)CuO_2, (Sr, Ca)_2 CuO_3 and liquid in the region 1.8<x<2.1 at 850℃. On the other hand, for x=2.3, Bi_2(Sr, Ca)_3O_6 and (Sr, Ca)CuO_2 are presentas solid phases, while for x=1.8, Bi_2(Sr, Ca)_3O_6 and (Sr, Ca)_2CuO_3, and for x=1.6, only (Sr, C8,)_2CuO_3 is present. In the entire range of x, the liquid phase has a characteristic composition of Bi:(Sr+Ca)=1:1 while the content of Cu changes as x changes. The solidification of the Bi2212 phase proceeds below 840℃. The Sr/Ca ratio of the 2212 phase grown from the melt is found to be nearly equal to that of the starting material. As temperature decreases, Cu content in the liquid decreases while the ratio of Bi:(Sr+Ca) remains at 1:1.
