A planar acoustooptic (AO) device composed of two adjacent channel waveguides is proposed and analyzed. The planar AO device is suitable for integrating the devices in the horizontal direction, as compared with vertically coupled AO devices. This planar AO device is useful in optical integrated circuits such as integrated N×N matrix switches. We discuss the coupling process and the efficiency characteristics of the proposed planar AO devices. The required surface acoustic wave (SAW) frequency is 100 MHz at the waveguide separation distance of 0.5 μm.
