A new operation mode which has two substrates with different surface interaction characteristics, a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture with a large spontaneous polarization, a large tilt angle, and an N^*・Sc^* transition, is experimentally studied. Measuring optical properties of the developed cell shows that the new operation mode provides black and white images even when the cell is thick (3-6μm).
