The metastable phase of MnF_2 (MnF_2-IV, α-Pbo_2 type) is formed with particles smaller than about 10 nm. The concentration of the MnF_2-IV phase increases with decreasing particle size, and finally the MnF_2-IV phase becomes dominant in 5 nm particles, in which very weak X-ray diffraction peaks of rutile-type MnF_2 (MnF_2-I) are detected. The largest particles (d〜14 nm) are dominated by the MnF_2-I phase.
