A gridded ^3He ionization chamber had about 1-2% energy resolution, and was suitable for neutron spectroscopy of DD neutrons to measure the ion temperature. The gridded ^3He ionization chamber was used to measure the neutron spectra on the tokamak fusion test reactor (TETR) during 1987. The ion temperature was deduced for one set of ohmically heated plasmas and agreed within 20% with that measured by other diagnostics. The deuterium concentration n_d/n_e and Z_<eff> were estimated with 40% uncertainty from the ion temperature measured with the neutron spectroscopy and the neutron source strength measured with fission chambers.
