This paper deals with experiments and computations concerning the focusing of laser diode elliptical Gaussian beams truncated by a centered circular aperture. The spot diameter of the focused beam was calculated in relation to the truncation coefficient. The experimentally measured values of the spot diameter closely agree with the calculated values within the error of 4%. When the minor axis size of the elliptical beams fits the pupil rim of the objective lens, the experimental and the calculated results indicate that adjusing the minor axis of the spot fitting parallel to the tracks results in twofold increased playback frequency characteristics at the spatial frequency 0.85/μm and about 4 dB less cross talk than in the case of fitting perpendicular to the tracks.
