The iterated moment method (IMM) is improved in this paper to make it suitable for the analysis of step-index or graded index arbitrary cross-section core and/or arbitrary index profile weakly guided dielectric waveguides. The advantages of IMM, such as the simplicity and the rapidity are still preserved. For all types of waveguide analyzed in this paper, a third order approximation is sufficient to give a reasonable precision.
