The discharge characteristics of an extetnal cathode type hollow-cathode discharge tube are discussed morphologically with a view to applying this tube to a metal vapor laser. A negative glow is formed around the axis of the cylindrical hollow-cathode in accordance with a continuous transition from Townsend discharge to normal glow discharge. A single anode is sufficient to obtain symmetric negative glow. The anode should be placed in a such manner that it separates the hollow-cathode discharge space into a space of regular glow discharge and one of obstructed glow discharge.
