Finite amplitude sound pulses are radiated into the free air space by using transducer of electro-magnetic induction type. For the purpose of finding the relationship between the acceleration of the source plate and the sound pressure of the radiated pulses, some measurements are made. In the range of the low acceleration of the source plate, the experimental values for the peak pressure of the radiated sound pulses agree fairly well with the theoretical values for the radiation of the infinitesimal sound waves from circular piston. However, in the range of the high acceleration, these two are not in agreement. Taking account of the attenuation by the absorption of sound in the medium, the peak pressure and the width of the sound pulses propagating through free space are measured. It is found that the attenuation coefficient in free space is proportional to the peak pressure at a reference distance in the free field, if the pulse width is constant.
