External pressure was applied onto the surface of the powder bed in a cylindrical container. Linear relations between external and bottom pressures as expected from Shaxby's equation were observed in the increasing external pressure process. From this linear relation, a powder parameter c was obtained. When a sufficiently large and rough-walled cylinder was used, c is regarded as a parameter expressing the combined property of friction and cohesion of the powder bed, and had a linear relation with the rate of tapping compaction which suffered little wall effect.
