Electron Loading in the Accelerating-Tube of the Electro-Static Accelerator

Measurements of the intensity of X-rays produced by electron loading and of the loading currents were made for two kinds of accelerating-tube of an electro-static accelerator as a function of terminal potential up to 4.0 MV. The distinct threshold and saturation of electron loading are observed in the case of little or no beam current, while they seem to have disappeared at least for one kind of the tube when much more beam is accelerated. It was found that a large fraction of X-rays was emitted as a train of intermittent bursts above the threshold. Duration of each burst was estimated to be about 40 msec. The threshold was raised by increasing gas pressure in the tube, when five kinds of gas-hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, neon and argon-were fed in the tube, and it was found that mono-atomic gases were more effective than diatomic gases.
