Two methods to extract characteristic features from a visual pattern are proposed by making use of Fraunhofer diffraction produced by a laser beam. One is to find the presence and the disposition of straight line elements in a pattern from a sequence of straight lines appearing in the diffraction image by illuminating a part of the pattern by the beam and moving the pattern across it. The other utilizes a double diffraction optical system which performs low-pass or band-pass spatial frequency filtering to modify the visual pattern. It is experimentally found that cross points, corner points and edges of the pattern are emphasized. An analogy between this system and the human visual nervous system is also pointed out.
