By etching cleavage faces of synthetic barium fluoride crystals in nitric acid of a particular concentration, pits of different shapes and orientations have been produced on the same face. Correspondence in shapes and orientations of pits have been observed on matched pairs. It has been shown that the etch pits nucleate at the sites of dislocations. The inclinations of the dislocation lines have been calculated. The different shapes and orientations of the pits have been attributed to local changes in the structure of the crystal. Trisecting-Rows of etch pits have been observed on the two sides of thin flakes. It is observed that the pit density in one arm equals the sum of the pit densities in the remaining two arms. It is, therefore, conjectured that the rows of pits represent probably the small angle tilt boundaries in the crystal.
