The photocurrent and thermal release time of trapped carriers in sintered uranium dioxide have been measured, mainly at room temperature. The peak positions of photocurrent spectra indicated that the characteristic energy level of uranium dioxide is about 2.0∼2.3 eV. This level was not affected by the O/U ratio; however energy levels having smaller values than about 1.0 eV were affected by the O/U ratio. The measurement of thermal release time of trapped carriers also indicated that the shallow energy levels were affected by the O/U ratio. Infrared absorption spectra between 2.8μ and 45μ showed no particular absorption band, using powdered-film specimens, because the illuminating light source was too weak.
