Some fundamental properties of a discharge chamber operated by a pulsed microwave field were investigated. The discharge chamber was operated at an electric field of about 3 kV/cm, which is as low as in the case of the conventional d.c. discharge chamber. Under the optimum operating condition, it gave a three-dimensional track of a particle. The track was reasonably sharp, the average radius of discharge spots being about 0.7 mm and the root-mean-square deviation from the path of a particle being about 0.9 mm. The number of discharge spots per unit track length varied with ionizing intensity of a particle. Delayed triggering was found to improve the ionization density measurement as does delayed expansion of the cloud chamber. The mechanism of spot formation is discussed with particular attention to the relation between the observed spot density and the initial ion pair density.
