The dependence of the pumping speed and sensitivity of a Bayard-Alpert gauge on the electrode potentials has been measured for helium, argon and krypton at pressures of about 10^<-7> Torr. For argon and krypton it has been found that the pumping speed can be reduced with relatively small decrease in the sensitivity by lowering the electrode potentials, though the accompanied decrease in the sensitivity is not small for helium. A decrease in the sensitivity with increasing electron current has been observed and explained as an effect of electron space charge inside a grid. The ionic pumping speed at the ion collector has been estimated to be about two or three orders of magnitude lower than the total ionic pumping speed.
