In the ordinary spark machinings the clearance between a work and a tool electrode cannot be increased without destroying the fineness of the matt-type of the surface finish. In the present spark machining, however, high frequency electric oscillations initiated by electric sparks formed between a spark gap break insulations of a thin film of petroleum existing between the electrodes, and thus facilitate the low voltage machining discharges of a definite condenser in a space between the electrodes, the upper limit of the space, that is the clearance, being determined by an adjustment of the spark gap. The clearance obtained in the surface of lower side of the work electrode increases linearly from 0.043 mm to 0.115 mm with the increase of the spark gap from 0 to 2.2 mm. The roughness of all the finished surfaces is nearly equal and is independent of the clearance. It is discussed that, if we use a modern type machine in the present spark machining method, instead of the present use of a bench drilling machine, the clearance from 0.005 mm to more than 0.1 mm may be obtained keeping the roughness expressed by heights of projections formed on finished surface to a definite value 0.005 mm.
