The milky precipitates in synthetic quartz produced by heat treatment were studied by infrared absorption, light scattering tomography, X-ray topography and etching method. The precipitates were formed after heating above 500℃ in the regions containing high concentration of hydrogen bonded OH. The contrast corresponding to the local distribution of the milky precipitates were observed in X-ray topographs. The precipitates were found to grow to the large particles when the specimen was heated at higher temperatures. Etch pits correspond to the precipitates were also observed by etching in HF solution. The results suggest that the precipitates are correlated with aggregated hydrogen bonded OH, which has been occluded since the time of crystal growth.
