The triple point of water in sealed glass cells with commonly recommended specifications possesses incomprehensible characteristics, namely a gradual rise of the triple point temperature by about 0.2 mK during the first few days and, in some cells, a gradual depression after the first ten or so hours. This is a source of uncertainty in the triple point of water as a temperature fixed point, and possible causes of these characteristics are examined in this paper. It is found that refreezing of the water around the thermometer well and impurities concentrated in the "quasiliquid" at the surface of the ice crystals are the respective causes of the gradual rise and depression. It is confirmed that the triple point of water can be achieved with an accuracy of 0.1 mK after the first few hours in normal cells.
