The thermoelectric power (TEP) of carbon fiber prepared by thermal decomposition of benzene at 1080℃ was measured as functions of heat treatment temperature (HTT) and ambient temperature (T_a). The fiber shows somewhat similar dependences of TEP on HTT and T_a to those found in graphitizing carbons, which are in good agreement with Mrozowski's band scheme. When HTT comes up to 3000℃, the dependence of TEP on T_a approaches to that of a single-crystal graphite, indicating a high degree of crystallographic perfection of the fiber. Remarks about magneto-Seebeck effect of the fiber are discussed in relation to the imperfection originating from the fiber structure with cylindrical graphite planes.
