A regular striped pattern has been observed in viscous and viscoelastic fluids during rolling. The stripes run in the direction of rotation of the roller at equal intervals. The number of stripes increases discontinuously with the decrease of viscosity, the lowering of clearance, and the increase of the roller speed. At the outlet from the clearance, stripe patterns with saddles have been observed. The height of the saddle is correlated with the Maxwellian relaxation time of the liquids. The saddle part is continuous to the peak on the surface of the roller. The height of the peak is determined by the centrifugal force and viscoelastic properties of the liquids. The reason for the regular spacing of the stripes is still unexplained.
