A strain relaxation apparatus is designed for a rapid measurement of anelastic phenomena under high pressure. A linear variable differential transformer is used as a strain sensor. The shortest relaxation time measurable with the apparatus is 10 sec. The reproducibility of the relaxation curve is satisfactory, and no pressure effect is found on the output characteristics of the transformer at pressures up to 8 kbar in contrast to the results previously reported by Mizouchi and others. This is confirmed by the fact that all relaxation curves studied on 0.15 at. % nitrogen in alpha iron fitted to a single curve within the experimental error of 0.5 % of total anelastic strain.
