The oxidation of methane, highly diluted with argon, has been investigated in the temperature range of 1200 to 2100K. The densities of gas mixtures behind reflected shock waves are varied from 7×10^<-5> to 1.5×10^<-3> mol/cm^3. The emission and absorption profiles of the gas mixtures are measured at wavelengths of 2160 Å, 3100 Å, 3660 Å, 3.43 μm and 4.5 μm. The concentrations of various species are determined by these profiles. The concentration of hydroxyl radicals can be calculated from the concentration profile of carbon dioxide after the induction periods. The rates of methane decay are observed in the main reaction zone, and their dependence on temperature as well as on the methane and oxygen concentrations are also measured in this zone.
