In order to investigate the possibility of pseudo-twinning, i.e., a previously proposed mechanism of kinking, the temperature dependence of the shear stress which acts on the boundary of the kink band during its growth under compressive force was studied in oriented polyethylene. With a drop in temperature, the shear stress increased gently in the range of primary dispersion of viscoelasticity, and increased rapidly at the boundary between the primary and secondary dispersion regions. In the specimens in which all the lamellae tilted to the same side of the fiber axis, the kink band always tilted to that side, and the shear stress was smaller than in the specimens in which lamellae tilted to both sides. Heat of fusion was estimated fairly well with a model of pseudo-twin from the shear stress in the former specimens. These results support that pseudo-twinning is induced by shear in amorphous layers.
